How It Works
This 5e Encounter Difficulty Calculator uses the exact mathematical formulas from the official D&D 5th Edition System Reference Document (SRD 5.1).
- Party XP Thresholds: Each character level has designated XP benchmarks for Easy, Medium, Hard, and Deadly encounters.
- Monster Multipliers: Action economy matters in 5e. Fighting multiple creatures multiplies the encounter difficulty (e.g. 2 monsters = 1.5x, 3-6 monsters = 2x).
- Party Size Adjustment: For parties smaller than 3 characters, multipliers scale up. For parties of 6 or more, multipliers scale down.
- Total XP vs Adjusted XP: Total XP is what you award your players after the fight. Adjusted XP is only used by the DM to measure danger.
